2024 - My quilting year in review from Wendy's Quilts and More

It's the end of the year and time to look back at what I made in 2024.

The first few months on the year were spent finishing my Kokomo quilt (Stars Upon Stars).  Our guild's exhibition in May was the motivation I needed to get going and finish it.  I started it at the beginning of 2020, so it deserved to be finished, but going from a bunch of blocks to a finished hand pieced and hand quilted quilt in just five months took a lot of dedication.

During that time I also hand quilted Last Christmas:

And ...

Auditioning for "Best" Choice is the Key to Stash Busting Quilt Projects from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

I should have kept count of the number of projects I've seen "die on the vine" so to speak while students and customers hunt for more of the exact same fabric or the perfect fabric.  Certainly, that was my excuse for not finishing projects until I discovered picking the "best" of the available choices gives me excellent results!

Not only has that strategy helped me get to the finish line over and over again, but it's led me to create some of my best quilts -- no make that some of my favorite quilts!

Now I confidently dive into ...

Pieces of Love: Quilting (again) from Becca's Crazy Projects

For my second try at quilting this quilt, I decided to use Echoed Curves from Longarm League
I admit I'm a sucker for an edge-to-edge that filles the space and doesn't hint at where one row starts and the next starts. Echoed Curves is one of those.
It quilted out beautifully and I think it added great texture to the quilt.
Here it is, trimmed and ready for binding.
I grabbed this fabric from my collection for binding. Binding is cut, sewn, and pressed. I just need to get it attached. My new favorite ruler for cutting binding ...

Pieces of Love: (Un-)Quilting from Becca's Crazy Projects

I picked this beautiful color thread to quilt my Pieces of Love quilt.
I loaded it up and ready to quilt.
I quilted two rows of this delightful all-over feather. And hated every stitch. It was too dense. It didn't come close to what I imagined this would look like stitched out on this quilt.
Then, over the course of the week, I spent over four hours ripping out those two rows of quilting. It was back breaking, exhausting, and sad.
It made quite a mess. And I ripped more than a couple holes in the backing fabric. Thank ...

Charming: Tapestry from Becca's Crazy Projects

I have an embarrassingly large stack of quilts waiting for binding. I quilted this charm quilt in March and I attached the binding.
I added my simple label to this one.
Here it is. Finished! I should pull out another stack of charm squares.

Want to see how I cut all of these half-square triangles from 5" charm squares quickly and accurately? Check out this die-cutting post (corrected link).

Charming: Pheasant Hill from Becca's Crazy Projects

It's been a while since I posed an update on my Pheasant Hill charm quilt. I had more than a little yardage of a large floral print on a brown background that I decided would be a perfect backing for this quilt. I measured, cut, and pieced the backing. Then it was time to load it onto the frame and pick a quilting design.
Quilted and trimmed.
Now I just need to attach and finish the binding.

An Excellent Rule!?! from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

An English Instagram friend recently posted
"if you finish a project, you can start three new ones"!!
Sounds like an excellent rule, don't you think??
And since I just finished a couple projects, I'm caving in to this one.
This is the first step of a new mystery quilt along led by the Darty Kite Pattern Company for EPP or hand-piecing -- Chrysalis Cascade Mystery!!  Of course, I'm machine-piecing it.
I would like to EPP it, but my left hand voted NO so . . . . . .
My plan is to stash-dive for the fabrics and I started with this lovely floral ...

Pieces of Love from Becca's Crazy Projects

As I was working through the adult joy that is filing my tax return, I told myself I was going to buy myself something when I finished. That something was a copy of the quilt pattern Pieces of Love by Whole Circle Studio. Did I need another quilt pattern? Absolutely not. That didn't stop me. I bought and downloaded the pattern and starting thinking about the fabrics I wanted to use.

A friend gifted me this bundle of Kona cotton solids. This is the Kona Cotton Fat Quarter Bundles 12 Pieces Peacock (affiliate link). I paired it with this ...

Making Do from Becca's Crazy Projects

Have you ever needed backing for a quilt and not had the exact single cut of fabric? Let's talk about it.
I needed a quilt backing that measured at least 57" long. I didn't have that, but I did have a cut that was over a yard, and a half yard of another fabric. Perfect!
First, I straightened the edges by ripping the fabric. This makes sure I won't have an issues with the piecing. Then, rip again along the length of fabric. This effectively makes that half yard of fabric into two fat quarters.

Keeping the ...

Charming Maison de Garance from Becca's Crazy Projects

While writing this post I realized I didn't share the name of this fabric line. This is Maison de Garance by French General for Moda.
According to that label, this fabric has been in my collection since 2010.
In May 2023, I cut the charms into 2.5" strips and used them as leaders & enders. If you're curious about this technique for making a quilt on the side (like a quilter's side hustle) while working on other projects, I highly recommend Quiltville. In the free patterns section you will find almost a dozen different leader & ender projects ...

Charming: Phesant Hill from Becca's Crazy Projects

This is my second post about one of my charm pack quilts. Check out the first post from last week to see the cutting tools.
When I say I didn't plan this layout you will just have to believe me. I just grabbed contrasting colors and stitched them into pairs. Then stitched the pairs into sets of four, and so one until I had a row of 16 tumblers. Then I added one more to the end for a total of 17 per row.
I tried to get them to line up so there weren't too many of ...

30's Playtime from Becca's Crazy Projects

There was a time when I would pick up 30's reproduction prints. At some point, a quilting friend gave me some she had. So far, I've made at least three quilts using this fabric. Let this be a lesson about over-buying fabrics.
I cut the charm packs into half-square triangle units using the Accuquilt Go. You have to be careful when cutting 5" charms because there isn't much room for mistakes.
I made a bunch of 4-patch in 4-patch blocks.
In the end, I had enough blocks to make a fun, scrappy quilt. Now it just needs ...

Charming: Pheasant Hill from Becca's Crazy Projects

Continuing my series of quilts made with charm packs, I bring you Pheasant Hill. I have six charm backs and two one-yard cuts of coordinating fabric. This time we're going with tumblers cut using the Missouri Star template.
I also used my rotating 14" by 14" cutting mat. This is great if you don't want to have to reposition the template when cutting. You just rotate the mat. Easy! You can also get a smaller 8" by 8" cutting mat.
This tumbler lets you quickly cut your charm packs into the right shape.
Neatly cut and stacked!
I ...

Fabric Diet Fail from Becca's Crazy Projects

This year I didn't make it very far without buying fabric. I tell myself every year that I won't buy fabric I don't need. Then, I go in search of backing fabric and come home with more than backing fabric. This time, it was a trip to Spring Water Designs. The four, 1-yard cuts in the foreground were fabrics on the discount shelf. I have no plan for these fabrics but they were just too good to leave behind. I also grabbed a cone of Omni for the long arm. Omni is a great thread and one ...

Charming: Tapestry from Becca's Crazy Projects

Over the last week I've managed to sew the half-square triangle units together. I'm pleased with the layout. It is scrappy and not very controlled. If I had placed each half-square triangle I would have a completely different outcome. Maybe next time.
I cut the inner and out borders, and binding.
Nicely pressed binding ready for the quilt. Now to get the borders added so I can do some quilting.

Charming: Tapestry from Becca's Crazy Projects

I'm sure you've been wondering how my die cut charm squares project is coming along. I've been sewing them up into units and pressing them open. This is the perfect kind of sewing if you have only a couple minutes. You can piece a couple units and walk away without feeling like you will lose your place.
The I played around with the layout. I sewed the units mostly randomly, with the only rule being there should be contrast between the two triangles.
This is almost the final layout. I think I moved a couple units around ...
